Discovering Hidden Bars: Top 3 Speakeasy Bars in Vienna

When it comes to nightlife, Vienna (Wien) is a city that never disappoints. For those who enjoy a touch of mystery and a dash of adventure with their cocktails, the speakeasy bars of Vienna are a must-visit. These hidden gems offer not just drinks, but an experience. Here are my top three favourite speakeasy bars in Vienna that promise to make your night unforgettable.

1. Fitzcarraldo Bar

Address: Neubaugasse 38/1, 1070 Wien
Website: Fitzcarraldo Bar
Instagram: @fitzcarraldo_bar

Fitzcarraldo Bar tops my list, and for a good reason. The adventure begins right at the entrance – a pretend vending machine that dispenses not snacks but access to a world of mixology magic. With a simple button press, a secret sliding door opens, leading you into a beautifully decorated interior.

The dimmed, moody lighting perfectly complements the leaf and jungle-themed wallpaper, creating an intimate ambiance. The seating is cleverly designed, with cosy nooks for small groups and charming tables for pairs. But what truly sets Fitzcarraldo apart is the creativity and technical prowess of their drinks. Each cocktail is a masterpiece, served with a unique twist that adds an element of surprise and delight.

Don't miss the all-gold restroom – it's a sight to behold and adds a touch of luxury to your night out.

2. Plus43 (+43) Speakeasy Bar

Address: Westbahnstraße 10, 1070 Wien
Website: Plus43 Speakeasy Bar
Instagram: @plus43vie

From the outside, Plus43 looks like a place under construction – the perfect guise for a speakeasy. The entrance, a big door with a 9-pin code lock, adds to the exclusivity. You need to know the code to get in, which many people book in advance. However, I simply called their number (thanks, Google) and was graciously given the code to join in the fun.

Inside, Plus43 is a small, cosy haven. The cloud night sky ceiling creates a unique, dreamy atmosphere. The cocktails here are unlike anything I've encountered, each one a testament to their creativity. The restroom deserves a special mention too, stocked with essentials like deodorant and pads – a thoughtful touch that enhances the classy vibe.

The coasters, with their cool designs, are another perfect detail that adds to the high-end feel of this speakeasy. See the night I found the +43 hidden bar HERE.

Hot Tip: Bar hop between Fitzcarraldo and Plus43 as they are just a 2-minute walk from each other!

3. The Chapel

Address: Haidmannsgasse 8, 1150 Wien
Website: The Chapel
Instagram: @thechapelbarvienna

The Chapel is perhaps the most fun and challenging to find. Located on Haidmannsgasse, the entrance is a big white door marked only by a "Let's be Frank" sign. Once inside, the adventure continues as you navigate past restrooms, random doors, and a seemingly innocuous painting. The twist? The painting is the door!

Inside, The Chapel offers a playful take on Catholicism, blending humour with a distinctive religious theme. The drinks here are a highlight, each one presented in imaginative ways. One cocktail even comes hidden in a bible – a whimsical touch that encapsulates the bar's unique character.

The interior, resembling a chapel-like shed, offers cosy spaces for small groups. The friendly staff and quirky decor make The Chapel a must-visit.

Vienna's speakeasy bars are more than just places to grab a drink; they are destinations for adventure and unique experiences. Whether it's the secret vending machine door at Fitzcarraldo, the exclusive 9-pin code entrance at Plus43, or the hidden painting door at The Chapel, each bar offers its own slice of magic. So, next time you're in Vienna, make sure to embark on this thrilling bar-hopping journey.

Cheers 🍻
